We’ve worked with West Essex CSS (Children Support Services) in Harlow, Essex for the past two, three years. Often with photography and video based projects we’re limited to what we can share online (due to child protection issues) but these animations are perfect for sharing. Although we were limited with the time we had to work with the pupils, they were able to produce some high quality animation work. The theme was bullying and these mix media animations are the pupils take on the subject. Hope you enjoy they them and leave a comment as an encouragement to the kids!

Project Title: ‘Girly Girls and Macho Men’
School: The Billericay School, Essex
Funding/Organisation: Royal Opera House Creative Partnerships

Suklaa Role: Project Manager/ Creative Practitioner/ Documentation
Description:
This gender intervention project was designed as creative approach to tackling a real issue within the school. Staff noticed that certain groups of both boys and girls were not achieving what they were capable of. When interviewed the groups of girls told us they found it difficult to think of people they are inspired by. This sent alarm bells ringing! We must find inspirational women for the young people to engage with! This project is completely collaborative and is co-designed by young people, staff and creative practitioners who are unpicking gender stereotypes and issues of masculinity and femininity. The girls project was launched when the girls were picked up in limos and driven to a country house to look at how women are portrayed in the media and explore their intelligences. The boys launched in West Ham United Football Club where they toured the stadium and found out about the multiple roles men play within the business. This aspirational project will link with various businesses and professionals from multiple industries. We don’t know quite what the outcomes will be but hope the girls who design, organise and host a conference full of talks by inspirational women and the boys will go on to write, produce and star in a piece of theatre that explores what it means to be a man. Watch this space for updates!

The following videos were made by teachers and teaching assistants at Briary Primary School in Kent, UK. They were made in under an hour in an attempt to learn how to plan, film and edit videos quickly. Most of the participants had never edited videos before. We think the results are great- and they told us they’d be very happy making podcasts with their students now!

Project Title: Leadership and Creative Collaboration
School: Gable Hall Performing Arts College
Funding/Organisation: Gable Hall School

Suklaa Role: Darina from Suklaa collaborated with Claudia Barwell to design and deliver this work.
Description:
Claudia Barwell and myself were briefed by Corinne Franceschi, Deputy Head Teacher at Gable Hall School to design a day for the newly appointed Student Executive to help them become good leaders. During the packed day we considered each team member’s individual skills and talents; we ran activities that explored multiple intelligences; we looked at making change happen; we worked with ideas generation and how to host successful meetings; we helped the students pitch ideas to senior staff members. We hope this day is the start of a longer relationship with this core team of students- where we help them make change happen within their school community and beyond.

Some quotes from the participants:

I think it was good how we got to learn everyone’s strengths and weaknesses so that we can now give people tasks to work to their advantages and have people to help with their problems. It was a great day.

I’ve learnt actual life skills that I can apply in real life situations. I learnt how to handle a meeting situation and learnt a lot about myself.

We’ve discovered who we are and our strengths and weaknesses. I feel empowered to make change and don’t feel like I’m being babied anymore. I feel like my ideas are accepted and respected. Thank you so much.

If we did what we did today in year 7, we would have been a much closer group of people so much earlier on. Boundaries have been broken down, judgements of people and judgements of ourselves. Definitely an exercise everyone should have the opportunity to take part in.

If you can change 26 attitudes in a day; then if we did this with everyone, you can change everything – drastically. Everyone should do it.

Project Title: India – A Sensory Overload
School: Winter Gardens Primary School, Canvey Island
Funding/Organisation: Royal Opera House Creative Partnerships
Suklaa Role: Creative Practitioner- production designer
Description:
In six days, set across six weeks, we worked with year 3 students and teachers to help boost imagination and literacy skills. Using their chosen topic of India we worked with the 50 young people all together and in small groups allowing them to create scenes for a play. The play had 5 scenes each set in a Delhi market place, and each one was designed around one of the senses. The young people then performed their interactive short play in front of their proud parents and other classes- finishing the whole extravaganza with some fantastic Bollywood dancing! This was a massive achievement for the year group- everyone had a part to play and the literacy lessons really came alive!

Suklaa Role: Creative Practitioner

Description:
This project is the education and community link to the Ebsfleet Landmark Project- in which a 50 metre high installation was commissioned for a site in Ebsfleet, Kent. 5 leading artists were asked to create proposals- Mark Wallinger’s Horse proposal has recently won. We worked closely with a Longfield Academy which is nearby to the site in Ebsfleet to investigate what site specific work is, to create art pieces and to engage with the community to explore how this huge art piece will effect the area.

Project Title:’Bridging the Gap’
Funding: Creative Partnerships and GAP
School:Gable Hall School, Corringham, Essex
Suklaa Roles: Producer, Documentation- video/ photography

Description:
‘Bridging the Gap’ focused on young people’s relationships with what they wear both in and out of school. 50 students at Gable Hall School took part in this social experiment project- where they first discussed their personal style outside of school and to what extent their clothes expressed their personalities.

Weekend Uniforms
All the participating students were given a ‘weekend uniform’ consisting of straight blue jeans and plain white T-shirts- on a saturday they all wore them and were asked to remove any makeup/ jewelry etc we went to Lakeside Shopping Centre (a place they’d normally hang out during weekends) – they recorded info relating to how they felt, how other people reacted to them- as well as taking images and notes of relating to the fashion around them.

Personal Style
During the second phase of the project- three fashion designers and printmakers came in to work with the students- to help them alter their jeans and T-shirts in anyway the wanted to best fit what they felt was their personal style. The following saturday the students wore the new outfits and went back to the shopping centre to again record the results.

Market Place
In the final stage students worked in groups to create mini-business and designed and made one new outfit from the jeans and white T-shirt base- their brief was to create an outfit that they felt would best appeal to their immediate market (the whole school community 1200 students). The groups put together a pitch for their designs and organised a catwalk show and presentation in which their audience voted and the group with the most votes won.

Few quotes from partisipating teachers and students:
‘This was a fantastic project- it really helped the students to understand fashion design, branding and marketing- they created some brilliant work‘. (Teacher Gable Hall School)
‘I loved meeting the designers- their work was great! I want to be in fashion when I’m older and now I think I can do it!‘ (Gable Hall Student)
‘It was really hard to wear the blank t-shirt and jeans on our first trip to Lakeside- I felt boring and bland- I want to wear clothing that represents who I am‘ (Gable Hall Student).
